Skin Diseases Caused By Cosmetics

The cosmetics industry has a huge market.  Make- up is everywhere and is viewed to be a necessity by many women.  It is used to enhance features and create many exotic looks.  But there is a dangerous side to these beauty enhancing products.  Many of the chemicals that are used in these products can cause skin diseases. There are many different ways that patients can be affected by such products.  Below are a few examples of how these products of beauty can become products of pain.

Irritant Contact Dermatitis
This is the most common type of all skin diseases caused by cosmetics.

Symptoms
Often, when cosmetics are applied to facial skin, irritation will take the form of a rash and itching.  Most likely, extended exposure to irritating products will have these effects, especially in those patients with sensitive skin.

Causes
There are a number of products that can cause irritation. Cleansers cause a rash and itching when they strip away natural chemicals needed to keep facial skin healthy.  Astringents may cause the same problem when alcohol dries out the skin, robbing it of nutrients.  Facial treatments that exfoliate the facial skin can also cause dermatitis.

Treatment
First off, stop using the product or products that are causing the irritation.  Then consult a physician.  It is usually a simple solution, but can be complicated if a doctor does not outline the steps to take care of the irritation.  After the symptoms have cleared, testing may be necessary to determine the types of cosmetics that can be safely used.

Allergic Contact Dermatitis

This skin disease occurs less frequently than irritant contact dermatitis, but it is often difficult to tell the difference between the two as a similar rash appears in both.

Symptoms
Keep in mind that it might take a while for symptoms to show up if the patient is developing allergic contact dermatitis.  When symptoms do begin to become evident there will be redness and itchiness, but there is also swelling and blistering.  It is common for this to spread to the areas surrounding the affected area.

Causes
The causes for allergic contact dermatitis are very similar to the causes of irritant contact dermatitis.  However, fragrances and sunscreen can also cause symptoms.  In the case of the later, it isn’t that they rob the skin of necessities but rather they chemically react to the body chemistry of the patient.

Treatment
Stop using the product!  Then consult your doctor.  More often than not, the problem will be able to be solved by a topical cream.  If that does not work, then an oral corticosteroid will be needed to reduce the amount of swelling and inflammation.  Again, after the symptoms have been taken care of, it is common practice to do a series of tests in order to determine what exactly caused the allergic reaction.

In addition to these specific types of skin diseases that are caused in reaction to cosmetics, hair dye and sunscreen offer other irritant chemicals that my cause skin problems in patients.

Hair dye
Most often, the patient will not notice any symptoms from hair dye until it has been used for an extended period of time.  Then, the affected area will consist of the scalp, the face and the neck.  These areas will become irritated and inflamed.

Sunscreen
It is important to note that all chemically produced sunscreens have the potential to cause a reaction in the patient.  This often does not happen until the sunscreen comes into prolonged contact with the sun.  The mixture of chemicals in the sunscreen, the allergies of the patient and the sunlight cause skin disease to develop.
