Skin Diseases in Diabetes

Diabetes is a condition by which your system may not be producing insulin or it may be that the insulin produced by the body is not capable of converting the food into energy.  This will mean that the glucose or the sugar in the blood coming from the food you eat remains in the blood causing various disorders including heart disease, strokes and even amputation of limbs due to increase infection around the body.

What are the common causes of Skin Disease in Diabetes


1.    Bacterial infections may cause skin problems such as styes, boils, carbuncles and inflammations that are hot and painful.

2.    Fungal infections including jock itch, vaginal infections, athlete’s foot and ringworm.  Moist in the fold causes red itchy rashes especially in the armpit, groin, breast, nails and in between fingers.

3.    Dry and irritated skin, most often scaly and itchy.

5.    Diabetic Blisters – burn-like blisters commonly found at the back of the forearms, fingers, hands, legs, toes and feet.  These painless sores may heal in two to three weeks.

6.    Necrobiosis lipoidica, inflammatory and yellow patches leaving ugly scars in front of the legs.

The above skin problems are due to fluctuations in blood glucose level.  You may delay the onset of these skin problems by ensuring that you are able to manage your sugar level and by following the simple advice below.

How to avoid Skin Diseases in Diabetes


•    As a proactive approach, you may need to have a doctor check your skin regularly.

•    Drinking eight glasses of clean and fresh water a day will help avoid elevation of sugar level in your blood, thus you will avoid fluctuations of your glucose level.

•    Try to keep your skin clean and dry to avoid accumulating bacteria that may lead to infection.

•    Avoid using harsh soap or chemical, they may dehydrate your skin further.

•    You may also need to avoid too much exposure to ultra-violet rays.  This will decrease the possibility developing skin disorders.

Adherence to regular medication will help manage your diabetes on top of taking care of your skin.  This will ensure that no further complication will develop coming from your diabetes.

Treatment of Skin Disease in Diabetes


Some of the skin disorders that may develop in patients with diabetes may not need medication or treatment because they will be gone in two to three week.  However, taking care of the skin and making sure it is well moisturized at all times may help avoid skin disease in Diabetes.

If in case, the development of skin disease is not controlled, the following will be helpful to avoid its progress:

•    Topical steroids.  They may be useful to manage the skin problem.
•    Steroid injection or tablets may also be used especially in cases involving necrobiosis lipoidica or the yellowing brown patch that developed in front of the legs of a diabetes patient
•    Oral Ciclosporin, Aspirin and Dipyridamol combination will also be helpful in treating skin disease in diabetes

Diabetes in itself is a disease that may heavily affect suffers economically, physically and emotionally.  Combining the ill effects of malfunctioning endocrine glands and skin problems worsens the discomfort and complications of having diabetes.

Thus, for those who are not yet diagnosed with diabetes but is at risk having been related to diabetic patients, you may need to be careful and always consult your doctor to ensure that you will not develop the disease that affect millions of Americans.
