Rosacea

Rosacea is a common skin disease.  The unfortunate thing about this is that most individuals do not even realize that they have it.  Here are some facts about Rosacea.

General Facts
Most individuals who have rosacea do not even realize that they have a skin disease, as the symptoms are very similar to acne.
Rosacea affects the skin on the face more than anywhere else.
As mentioned above, it appears to have the same symptoms as a bad case of acne.  These symptoms include red inflammation in the cheeks, nose and other areas of the face.
Often times, contracting rosacea will have profound affects on the psychological well being of the patient.  These effects are often more severe than the physical affects of rosacea.  Symptoms can also affect the patient’s social life and professional productivity.
One of the deepest felt side effects of contracting rosacea is the profound affect on the patient’s self-esteem.  The symptoms of rosacea (swelling and redness) will cause a severe drop in self-confidence and self-image.
Currently, there is no cure for an outbreak of rosacea.

Some warning signs of Rosacea
Redness in raised areas of the face (cheeks, nose, etc)
Appearance of small blood vessels in areas of the face, most commonly the forehead or temples.
Bumps and pimples on the surface of the face.  This is the symptom that most mistake to be acne.
Eyes that are often irritated, being either itchy or watery.

Types of Rosacea
Rosacea

There are 4 subtypes of rosacea.  It is quite common for a patient to experience more than one subtype at any given time.  It is also common for different degrees of symptoms to be experienced at the same time.  For example, a patient might have dry eyes (a symptom of subtype 4) and pimples (a symptom of subtype 2).  These could vary in degree from moderate to severe.  As it is very difficult to tell the difference between rosacea and acne, it is important for the patient to seek medical advice quickly.  Treatment is possible, but it is more likely to succeed if the symptoms are recognized early and the proper diagnosis is given.

 1. Usually consisting of a flushing in the face, causing redness.
 2. More consistent flushing, along with bumps and pimples on the exposed facial areas.
 3. A thickening of the skin and swelling of facial extremities due to the excess tissue.
 4. There will be swings between the eyes being dry and the eyes tearing up. The more severe sensation will be a burning in the eyes and swelling of the eyelids.

Treatment of Rosacea

Although there is no cure for Rosacea, there are things that patients can do to ease the symptoms.

Environment
Make sure that skin, especially on the face, is always protected from the sun.  Sunscreen and hats are especially effective. Stay cool in the summer and stay warm in the winter.

Hygiene
It is important to avoid hot water, whether this is in the shower or in a Jacuzzi. Washing facial area with soap and water is important both in the morning and at night
Use moisturizer regularly.

Stress

Make sure that mental health is a priority.  Improperly coping with lots of stress will encourage symptoms. Practice techniques to encourage relaxation. Pay careful attention to diet, staying away from spicy foods and alcohol.

Although there is no cure for the symptoms of rosacea, there are many things that patients can do in order to ensure that flare ups are infrequent.  Knowing what triggers outbreaks and how to properly deal with them is key to living a successful life with rosacea.
