Scabies

The skin is the largest organ in a human body.  It helps protected your body with external factors including bacterial entry and temperature management.  However, possibilities of skin problems occur in many forms especially for those people with low immune system. Various skin problem include is scabies.

What is scabies

Scabies is a form of allergic reaction or infestation of microscopic mites.  These microscopic mites are clinically known as sarcoptes scabei or Norwegian scabies. This allergic reaction may manifest in the skin as red bumps or blisters.  Scabies will be extremely itchy.  Scratching it may cause cuts in the skin where bacteria may enter, infection will step in and the case of scabies will get worse.There is huge possibility of transferring the mites especially for bed partners where prolonged skin contact is apparent. Towels, beddings and clothes may also act as an agent for the transfer.

Signs and symptoms of scabies

•    Intense itchiness because of blistering and the allergic reaction of the skin to the mites.
•    Tiny blisters and little red bumps especially in the folds like armpits, groin area, under the breast and even in between the webs of the fingers.
•    Scaly and crusty skin may also appear on severe cases of scabies.

Causes of Scabies

Scabies do not respect social status.  This allergic infestation may happen to anyone and anywhere.

•    The common cause of scabies is prolonged contact with a person who may be infested with these tiny mites.
•    Healthy people may be infested but symptoms may not appear because the healthy body will be able to ward off the itchy mites.  People with low immune system may easily be infected by this allergy causing mites.
•    Scabies outbreak commonly happens in nursing home and extended care facilities because these mites and their eggs may be transferred to other person around the home.

Treatmant for Scabies

To be successful in treating scabies, you will need to kill the mites and theirs eggs.  This is something that you and your dermatologist can do as a team.

1. On the part of the doctor, after through examination he may prescribe skin creams and lotions with 5% permethrin, lindane, or crotamiton.  This medicine will kill the mites and their eggs, but patients need to ensure they follow the instructions in the packaging.  Avoid self-medication; it may possibly worsen the case so you need to be careful.

2. The second pace of the treatment needs to come from the house.  Clean all beddings and towels including personal articles of the scabies patients.  If possible, wash them in hot water and dry them in hot dryer.

3. Vacuum rags and furniture to ensure that should mites laid their eggs in them; you will be able to kill them as well.

4. You may also need to treat the other members of the household especially the bed partner of the scabies patient even if symptoms do not manifest in them.  This is to be sure that any mites or eggs left will be killed.

5. It may be worthy to mention at this stage that, only 4 to 6 weeks after infestation will symptoms of scabies appear.  Additionally, scabies is contagious, thus you need to make sure that treatment will be for all members of the family, this is to be sure that no more mites will ever live in your household.

6. Cleaning your body and your surroundings will be your best defense to ensure that you will not suffer from the allergic reaction from these itchy mites.

7. Infection is dangerous; it may even affect infants, thus, you will need to ensure the safety of your family by keeping tiny mites away from your home.
